It was a crisp, bright, sunny autumn morning, and from all over the state of Oklahoma,
Jobies were on their way to...
... a very secret destination!
The Fall Mystery Trip had begun, and excited girls from nearly every Bethel were headed toward a day of great fun,
great food, and fellowship.
Our rendezvous was at the Corinthian Masonic Lodge #307 in Cherokee (Alfalfa County).
After a hearty lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, everyone was ready to
continue our adventure.
Just south of Cherokee, we turned East, and drove in to the Great Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. Even before we were through the
gates, you could see the pure white salt flats stretching out for miles - glowing like snow in the middle of acres
and acres of winter wheat!
The main gate has an observation tower, information signs, and most importantly,
BATHROOMS!
Now we knew why we were supposed to bring a shovel and a pail! We are going CRYSTAL
DIGGING!
As we drove across the blinding white sand, everyone was looking forward to finding
the buried "treasure"; selenite
crystals that grow just under the salty crust.
Everyone got "down and dirty" and began digging! (Some of us went a
bit further than others!) and in just minutes there were excited
shouts from the girls and grownups alike as they began to uncover the coveted crystals!
Nowhere else in the world can these distinctive "hourglass" crystals
be found - only in the Great State of Oklahoma!
Some of the girls decided that the theme song for the day was "Holes"
from the Disney movie of the same name!
"Diggin' a huh' hole..."
An Honored Queen hard at work, leading her Bethel to fun and excitement!
Bethel 11, working
together to get those crystals!
The salt flats are quite beautiful, and the clean, pure air that rushes over them
is exhilarating.
All too soon it was time to pack up, and go home. We hope you'll be sure and join
us for next years Fall Mystery Trip! Who knows where we'll go next...!
